Funky fabric jewelry - Samara

I really enjoy working with fabric and textiles :)

And beads.

And whatever else I can find.

Here I've used a bracelet remnant
and an old drop pendant stone.
They're both about 20 years old.

I've yet to give this piece a chain to
complete it as a necklace.

Or it could be used as a brooch.

Niagara - Canada Culture Capital for 2012 and the Textile and Mixed Media Art Project

Today I begin documenting my work for the
textile project I am collaborating on.
Some months ago I stumbled upon a Facebook post
about this, and went ahead and applied.

It was just a brief message asking for
textile artists in Niagara to respond -
that was enough to get me interested.
And now here I am - one of the team
creating textile and mixed media pieces to
represent the Niagara Escarpment - how exciting!

Basically, we are working from photographs
(also juried entries) of the escarpment
and re-imagining them as textile and mixed-media works.
In the end, though, our translation still needs to
look like the photo we were assigned.

This is the piece I have been given
 - it was truly the yummiest, juiciest picture of the whole lot.
I feel so lucky
(and a little intimidated - it's such a complex image)!

It measures 18 inches by almost 5 feet!

Coincidentally, the NanoBot is working on her own
Very Large Project,
so I stuck my image right beside hers.
That way we can spur each other on:)

I looked up about the assignment and this is what I found:
The project is "a collaborative art project as part
of Niagara's 2012 Cultural Capital of Canada celebrations.

The project requires a variety of textile and mixed media artists,
including hand and machine quilters,
traditional and contemporary quilt artists,
hand and machine embroiderers, felters and beaders,
and artists who work with metal,
paper, plastic, and other materials."

Here are some close-ups:

So much intricate detail -
and I have to do this all in fabric - yikes!

The sheer size of the project alone is
bigger than anything I've ever done.

There will be lots of painting, layering and beadwork.
I'll use embroidery too, I think!

But isn't the image just lovely?

Peach blossoms - YAY!

Sounds wonderful, doesn't it?
I can't wait to see how each artist (there are about 14 of us)
will translate her or his particular image.
When the panels are all done,
they will become
a permanent exhibit for the Niagara Region.
Wow!

More coming soon!

Niagara Region textile and mixed-media project - I'm in!!!

The Niagara Region Textile and Mixed-Media Project -
sounds yummy, doesn't it?

It's going to be a permanent exhibit for the region,
and I am one of the 14 artists working on it!

I'm so excited to be part of something like this -
it's like being part of the history of Niagara - YAY!

So these are the three pieces I had submitted
for the juried selection.  The actual piece I'll be
working on will be about 2 feet by 5 feet - that's big!
They'll tell us exactly what it'll be in a few days.

I do know that it will be based on the Niagara Escarpment.

I thought it would be a good idea to show a mix of techniques...
This one is lots of fabric collage and hand-stitching...

This one has beading as the main focus...

And this one is all about playing with texture...
there's paint, machine-stitching, layering...

All three pieces are in frames and behind glass,
so it's not the best pics I took...

I'll find out more about the project soon -
April 3 is the day!

WIP

My poor camel!
It has yet to see the light of day,
although I did make ONE drawing (see below).

This is my first ever camel!

Actually, it's not mine at all...
I looked at a drawing here, and another one here
and made a sketch.

Sort of to get the feel of drawing this strange humped creature.

My own camel will have to be...my own drawing, of course,
but Google is a great help in sticky situations!

Meanwhile, more fabric!

These pics are pretty awful, btw;
it looks much better in person.

I made the bird as a brooch, originally,
but ended up using it here.
It's painted satin, cut out and edged with cord.
I added beads and embroidery on top - it's pretty sweet,
although you don't see the colors much in these pics.

I like how the right-sized button turned out to have
Good Luck inscribed on it.

After all, a bird in the bush is worth several in the hand :)
