Bloom True

This made me think of a whole bunch of waterfall paintings I did once,

although those were all cool blues.

I made this more spring-like, which reminds me of resilience.

In the face of adversity, to bloom true.

Drawing

Sometimes the simplest tools are the most fun!

Stylized botanicals with notepaper and pencil.

'School time'

One of the joys of unschooling is that

there is always time to follow your passion.

We usually do a bit of reading. writing and math in the morning,

and some history and geography is bound to happen

somewhere in the day, along with whatever interests us.

We research what takes our fancy that day.

There's lots of play time, sometimes we cook together.

And there's drawing. Lots and lots of it.

My thought cards for the year

Do you make New Year's resolutions?

I don't. I find it easier to try and be mindful 

on a daily basis, regardless of the calendar.

Does that mean I live mindfully all the time?

Heck, no. Do I want to? Absolutely!

But for me, small steps work better than

big huge lists of stupendous (yup, stupendous)

intentions and resolutions.

And three is a good number to start with :)

What's on your plate this year?

I just received a copy of the November issue of 

the lovely SISTERS Magazine,

and I have been featured in it as

"The Unschooled Artist".

I have yet to scan the article itself,

but here's the cover for now.

And it's pretty sweet :)

The cat lady...or a lady cat?

I couldn't resist adding the black-and-white rug :)

This drawing was entirely digital.

This one's for the turtles.

The NanoBot LOVES animals,

as in breathes, dreams, lives animals, 

so when a charity art exhibition opportunity came up

for helping the turtles at one of our 

favorite local haunts, called Heartland Forest,

it was the perfect chance for her to

flex her mighty artistic muscles.

For a ballpen-only, speed-drawing, non-colorist

she has done some pretty impressive colored drawings.

Just enjoying the process.

Every painting is a journey.

And I always like to stop and smell the roses.

The destination is then lost in the joy of getting there.

And that's OK.

Anatomy of Bliss - three ways

Painting in Photoshop. You know why it's so cool?

In a few small clicks...

you have a new mood.

This was done pretty intuitively, and in one go.

I didn't draw it out, or plan it to go any which way.

The part I like best about painting

(either with 'real' paints, or digitally)

is that the work takes on its own life and direction.

After that, it's only a matter of facilitating it,

and letting it manifest itself.

I could have gone on painting it,

but I stopped, and just changed the backgrounds.

In the end, I don't have a favorite - do you?

Art and animals

I thought I'd share some of the Nanobot's drawings over the years.

It's funny how some things are still the same -

she still draws straight with pen,

no pencils or erasers for her!

It's pretty much animals all the way :)

Cats and bunnies rule supreme,but I've seen

lemurs, elephants, horses, tigers, seals, dinosaurs,

butterflies, anteaters, wolves, pandas, snakes

...and then some.

This first drawing is from when she was exactly 2 and a half.

Each picture tells a definite story,

which she remembers with clarity

no matter how long ago it was.

At seven she still draws the same way,

still loves the same critters,

and still won't use a pencil or eraser :)
